“Men are like a fine wine. They begin as grapes and it’s up to women to stomp the daylights out of them until they turn into something acceptable to have dinner with.”

A “Bottle Shock” Experience

If you’ve seen the movie Bottle Shock, you know that in 1976 California wines were tested against French wines in a blind tasting…. and the California wines won! In a slightly similar event, a few Iowa wines were put in a blind tasting with some well-known wines from California. One of our wines, Boule de Poils, was in this blind tasting and you can see what happened at this link. www.kcci.com/video/30523859/detail.html?taf=des

Cityview’s Annual Best of Des Moines

Even though we are not in the Des Moines metro area, we were recently picked as one of the three finalists for Best Winery. Thank you to all who voted for us!

Tidbits

Winery words:   Winery “talk” can be funny or mistaken for something else if you are unfamiliar with them.
When we talk about “that wine needs to be racked” it’s not in reference to the Spanish Inquisition and what people were put on to torture them. “Racking” means transferring wine from one vessel to another, i.e. tank to tank or barrel to tank. There is no torturing allowed in the winery.
“Bench trial” is not some kind of exercise test nor does it have anything to do with law. For example, to make the best wine possible, a tasting with different blends or with different sugar levels is set up to determine the best aroma and taste. If a high acidity wine seems out of balance, some sugar will balance it just as lemonade is made better with the right amount of sweetness. In this case, the first glass of wine may start with zero amount of sugar, the second glass may have 1/2% sugar, the third glass may have 1% sugar, and so on. We taste each wine and vote which we think is the best. We may need to do a second bench trial if the first doesn’t meet our expectations. By doing these different bench trials, we can produce the best wine possible.

TIDBITS

-  Valentine’s Day is only celebrated in the U.S., Canada, Mexico, France, Australia and the U.K.

-  Wearing a wedding ring on the fourth finger of the left hand goes back to ancient Egypt where it was thought that the vein of love in that finger was a direct link to the heart.

-  Teachers receive the most Valentine cards, followed by children. Sweethearts come in fourth after wives.

-  It wasn’t until 1537 that St. Valentine’s Day was declared an official holiday. England’s King Henry VIII declared February 14th a holiday. Interesting that King Henry had six wives: one died, one survived, two divorced, and two executed. Hmmm….. and which one was his Valentine?

No executions at Snus Hill but you are welcome to bring your Valentine to the party or a visit any time we’re open (Wednesday – Sunday, 10 am – 6:00 pm).
